Being a firefighter in a region that gets as cold as it does in Iowa exposes us to some additional challenges. This month we will take a look at a few tricks that can help firefighters mitigate some of them.

At 10:56 on Dec. 7, 2021 Sheldon Fire Co was paged to a structure fire at 3587 Monroe Ave. Prior to arriving on scene Sheldon Fire asked for mutual aid for a tanker and manpower from the Hospers Fire Department due to the large amount of smoke that could be seen from the edge of town.

On Dec. 5, 2021 at 8:51 p.m., the Red Oak Fire Department was dispatched to 2587 K Ave. on a reported residential structure fire.

The first engine on scene reported heavy fire coming from a 2-story residential structure. Mutual Aid was called in from Stanton and Essex FD’s.

On Nov. 24, the Beemer Fire Department and Beemer Police Department responded to a truck on fire. Emergency personnel responded within a few minutes and found an unloaded grain truck fully involved in flames.

Yankton, Vermillion and Gayville firefighters responded to two injury accidents within five minutes of each other. The first accident was reported east of Yankton three miles on 309th Street where a stolen vehicle chase resulted in a rollover where both occupants were ejected.

Knox Box Planning

When teaching forcible entry, we stress the “try before you pry” concept. In today’s society the majority of the homes and businesses we respond to will be locked.
