Harney Street Structure Fire Escalates to Multiple Alarms

   On Jan. 20, 2022 at 9:06 p.m. the Custer Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 400 block of Harney St., incorporated, Custer City, Custer County, SD.

   First arriving firefighters found a free burning fire, with a moderate to heavy smoke condition, in the interior of a two story residential structure with fire extending to the exterior and roof assembly of the structure, and immediately struck a second alarm, eventually the fire went to multiple alarms.

   Firefighters from a two state, multi-county area, facing freezing temperatures and darkness, contained the fire to the structure of origin.

   There were no reports of injuries to civilians, firefighters or domestic animals.   The Black Hills Fire Chaplains Association and the Red Cross Serving Central and Western South Dakota are assisting the occupant.

   Agencies responding included Custer County Communications, Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Custer Volunteer Fire Department, Battle Creek Fire Department, Pennington County 911, Fairburn Volunteer Fire Department, Pringle Volunteer Fire Department, Argyle Volunteer Fire Department, Custer Ambulance Service, Custer County Search and Rescue, Custer Highlands Volunteer Fire Department, Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department, North Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, Rochford Volunteer Fire Department, New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department, Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department, Black Hawk Volunteer Fire Department, Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department, Newcastle Wyoming Volunteer Fire Department, Black Hills Electrical Cooperative, Black Hills Fire Chaplains and the Red Cross Serving Central and Western South Dakota.
