On Wednesday, July 19, emergency services from around the area were at Forestburg Farmers Elevator for a pre-incident planning session. The purpose of this event was to learn about the business and discuss how to handle emergency events that may occur, like fire, grain engulfment and high angle rescues. While there, a refresher grain engulfment rescue was held.

   Sept. 7-10, 2023: Iowa Firefighters Convention, Iowa Falls.

Sept. 9-10, 2023: Fire School, Grainfield, KS.

   Sept. 10, 2023: South Dakota 9-11 “Let’s Roll” Memorial Ride to honor the fallen heroes, 8 a.m. starts at Spearfish Station #1.

   Since 2004 I have been honored to write the monthly training drill for the Iowa Firefighter. I began when Iowa passed the 24-hour training requirement to assist departments in meeting these needs. I am often asked where the ideas come from and have I repeated any.

On August 10, about 10:10 pm, Waterloo Fire Rescue was dispatched to the area of Burton Avenue and Airline Hwy for a reported structure fire.

   Hill City Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the 200 block of Railroad Ave, Hill City, Pennington County, SD on Aug. 7, 2023 at 6:07 a.m.

   First arriving volunteer firefighters found a fire burning with moderate smoke conditions, in a cement containment pit.

Hay bale fire

The Denison Volunteer Fire Department was called out to hay bales burning in high winds on April 26. There were about 26 bales on a flat bed semi trailer.

Controlled burn

On April 22, Steve Yezek, an EMT and member of the Grafton Fire Department, came across Iowa DNR employees doing a prescribed burn south of Forest City near Hayfield.
